As winter lingers on and Christmas and the new year quickly approach, I keep reflecting back on the summer—days spent in the park under the warm sun with the sweetest kids from our community laughing and having fun. As I mentioned in the last post, we had a group of amazing interns for a few weeks here in Rome that were willing to help us out! It was soooo hard to say goodbye—for us and our kids! Girls, know that we miss you!
One of the interns is a very talented artist and teacher and hosted an art lab for kids. She’s also the one that played a major role in the mural we did! She taught them all about color theory using various techniques while telling the bible story of “Jonah and the big fish.”
The week after the art lab, we were blessed with another week-long visit from a church in Kentucky! This group of students was absolutely amazing and hosted a VBS in the park each afternoon. They told stories, played games, danced, and did various crafts. Some of our sweet Italian friends helped by bringing delicious snacks each day for all the kids! The group taught a song and dance to the kids who then performed it for all their parents and grandparents the last day when we had a big party.
My heart is so full when I think back to the smiles and laughter of all these kids. I love it when I pass them on the street and we can stop and talk with them and their parents. I love this community and the people that make it!
During the fall, as a community we were able to continue to gather together for various events at the park. Thanks to that amazing group from Kentucky, we were able to host Sotto le Stelle (Under the Stars) where we would show various movies in the park on Friday nights. Friends and families in the neighborhood helped out by bringing and serving food and drinks. It was so much fun!! And of course, what’s a movie without popcorn!
