Stepping into Campello Monti is like stepping back into another world from another time. It’s a village that not many Italians even recognize, located in the mountains northwest of Milano. The small village is so quiet and off the grid and makes for the perfect place to escape from the noise, unplug, and truly relax. It’s not the easiest place to get to with a small road hugging the side of the mountain and in the winter months, it isn’t even accessible due to all the snow. But in the heat of august, it was also the perfect place to get cool. In fact, that was the main reason we stumbled across the village when planning our family vacation—with highs of only 80F compared to the 105F in Rome (without air conditioning) for that time of year!

The small village (of about 50 people) has only one restaurant, which is also the local pizzeria, the bar, and basically the only store period in the entire town. That’s right, no farmacia, no supermercato, and no doctor’s office. We did eat some pizza and had breakfast one morning there at the little restaurant. But for the most part, we ate in our cozy cabin we had rented on airbnb for the week. The owner is super nice and helpful! Plus, it is very affordable. It’s not luxurious, but it is living in peace and being surrounded by nature. Plus, the fireplace is amazing. We even roasted a chicken on the fire one night.

There are hiking trails in every direction from the town. We weren’t sure how the kids were going to do, but they loved it and were quite the troopers! There are vipers in these highly elevated mountains, so we brought along hiking sticks equipped with sharp points on the tips in case we were to see one. Thankfully, we did not!

We spent our days hiking, stopping to cool off in the cold streams and rivers, and playing games in the cabin. As you begin one of the hiking trails at the top of the town, you quickly walk by a small little farm with cows that graze the mountainside, free-range chickens, bunnies, and goats. Several times during the week, we stopped to buy fresh eggs, unpasteurized milk, and fresh cheese. Soooo good!

When we set out on this vacation, we knew we didn’t want to do a lot of sightseeing, but wanted to relax and rest from a busy summer. Campello Monti makes for the perfect place to escape into the beauty of God’s creation and focus on the things that really matter.
