Lago di Braies is one of those magical places that is most definitely worthy of being insta-famous and on thousands and thousands of pinterest boards. The lake is located in the northeast corner of Italy near the Austrian border and is absolutely breathtaking as it is surrounded by mountains reaching high into the sky and a shoreline filled with adorable “Christmas trees.”

In winter, it feels as if you are stepping into the enchanted world of Narnia. With each step (and the occasional crackle—eek!), it’s hard to believe you are walking on top of frozen water that people canoe during the summer months. The horse-drawn sleigh full of smiling and laughing vacationers makes its way across the lake as the large, iron fire pits filled with crackling fires keep others warm despite the cold, winter air. The music the men make playing their alpine horns makes the experience feel even more like a scene from the movie The Sound of Music. A walk exploring through the trees and throwing ice makes for fun entertainment for the kids and evergreen branches are the perfect substitute for mistletoe.

This beautiful destination is truly amazing and well worth the detour when you find yourself in Northern Italy.
