New Year’s was exceptionally special for us this year as it was the start of our second year of living in Rome, but also because our best friends (Sommer’s sister and her family) had just arrived to visit us. It was also the first time we met our nephew who was born last year—and he is absolutely the most precious little baby!
When we lived in Oklahoma, we would often build a fire with Adam and Sherise and eat dinner outside. What better way to celebrate being back together again than to spend the night catching up and fellowshipping around another fire. Somehow food seems to always taste better if it’s cooked on an open flame.
Living in Rome is exciting over New Year’s. We often have fireworks at random all year long, but on New Year’s Eve, Romans go crazy. The light show was going on most of the night, but leading up to midnight was amazing. Of course, there was no way all the kids were going to sleep through the noise, so we brought them out on the balcony with us to watch the show and countdown with us.
We enjoyed showing them around our neighborhood, visiting our favorite coffee bars and markets. Who knew that Mickey Mouse, Topolino, would show up at the market that day! Needless to say the kids loved it. Mostly, they were so happy to have their buddies be back together again. Everywhere we went, we got all kinds of looks and questions about our blonde caravan of children. It was fun!
