Living in Rome is full of the excitement a big city brings and we truly love it. But, every now and then we love to get out of the craziness that also comes along with big cities and explore the beauty of Italy that is all around us. We were blessed to be able to take advantage of a sale at a resort in Tuscany that we have been interested in for years—even before we moved to Italy. When we saw the sale for Cortona Heights, we knew we wouldn’t be disappointed if we booked it.
On our way there, we spent an afternoon walking around Cortona. Yes, this is the little hill town made famous in Francis Mayes book, Under the Tuscan Sun. Before we had children, we visited the town back in 2008. This time, we were able to show our kids the charm of this quaint town.
Cortona Heights (also known as Borgo di Vagli) is absolutely beautiful. It’s remote, surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape of olive trees, forest, and mountains. We took the boys on their first official hike. For being so young, we think they did a pretty good job! Most of all, we simply enjoyed relaxing and being unplugged for a couple of days. It was so great to have time to sit, read, and reflect.
The staff at the resort was truly amazing, too. They were overly kind and helpful to us in so many ways. The accommodations were perfect for our family—nice, clean, but with a rustic charm in consistency with the heritage and history of the hamlet. We had a kitchen where we were able to cook most of our meals as well. One night we ate a classic Tuscan meal that was fantastic in the resort’s restaurant. We shared the delicious 4-course meal with the sweetest retired couple from Paris who have been traveling there for years. We hope we have the opportunity to go back again someday as well.
